Backpacker Journey to Vietnam: From Lake Como to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

The journey of a lifetime has started—my backpacker journey to Vietnam. The morning air in Malgrate was crisp and clear, wrapping Lake Como in a serene farewell. It was a day I had envisioned for months—leaving behind the familiar comforts of home for six months of exploration in Southeast Asia. As I sipped my final Italian coffee, I paused for a moment of quiet reflection—a Russian tradition, now embraced by my Italian family, to honor the significance of any journey.

This simple act of sitting in silence, “sit for the moment before the trip,” reminds us to ground ourselves in the present before stepping into the unknown. This time, the pause felt longer. Perhaps it was the weight of what lay ahead—a carefully planned, transformative journey, or the realization that I was about to create my calendar, free from the constraints of routine.

The Farewell

We drove to Malpensa Airport, the car filled with fragmented conversations, each of us lost in our thoughts. Before leaving, I couldn’t resist returning briefly to say goodbye to our cat, Musia. Would she even remember me after six months? Cats are unpredictable that way.

At the airport, reality began to sink in. My husband and son, tied to their calendars—school schedules and university timetables—wished me luck as we parted ways. This was my moment. A mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and gratitude—filled the air as we exchanged hugs and said goodbye.

The Departure

Flying with Singapore Airlines felt like stepping into a different world. The holiday decorations on the plane added a festive touch, blending tradition with modernity.

The crew, dressed in elegant national attire, welcomed us warmly.

As I settled into my seat, I noticed a Buddhist monk nearby. His calm demeanor and steady gaze seemed symbolic, as though he embodied the stillness I sought to carry on this journey. Perhaps, I thought, this encounter was no coincidence.

With a deep breath, I felt ready. The plane lifted off, and Italy faded into the distance. Southeast Asia awaited.

The First Step of Many

This journey is not just about destinations; it’s about discovery—of places, people, and myself. Over the next six months, I’ll explore Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Each place holds its own story, its hidden beauty, waiting to be uncovered.

For now, my story begins with the hum of an airplane engine, the warmth of a stranger’s smile, and the quiet certainty that this is exactly where I’m meant to be.

My Backpackers Journey Begins in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Landing in Vietnam felt like entering a world alive with energy. The 30°C heat hit me immediately, a stark contrast to Lombardy’s winter. The streets buzzed with the symphony of scooters, each weaving through traffic with an unspoken rhythm that felt chaotic yet fascinating.

At the City Backpackers Hostel, I was welcomed with warmth and practical advice. Removing my shoes at the door—a small but meaningful act of the cultural respect embedded in everyday life here.
